Report: US Adds 850,000 Jobs in June

The US added 850,000 jobs in June, a sign the country is expediting post-vaccination.

The national unemployment rate remained relatively stable, rising from 0.1% to 5.9% in June, perhaps because more people flocked to the edge to join the labor force.

The figures were better than expected. Predictions ahead of the latest release estimated 700,000 jobs would be added in June, 150,000 fewer jobs than the number released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

At a press conference, Joe Biden said Friday’s report was “something more to celebrate” and said the $1.9tn stimulus package he signed in March helped with the recovery.

“This is historic progress, pulling our economy out of the worst crisis in a hundred years,” Biden said.

266,000 New Jobs Added

Jobs growth exceeded estimates for the first time since the COVID-19 vaccine began to be widely distributed in the US. April was a particularly difficult month in comparison, with 266,000 new jobs added to the country that month – far less than the expected 1 million. New jobs doubled to 559,000 in May but were still lower than expected.

As most states completely lift their coronavirus social distancing and masking restrictions, more Americans are traveling and eating out. A significant number of the jobs added in June came from the leisure and hospitality sectors, with about 200,000 jobs added in food and beverage services. Employment in the retail industry also rose in June, along with private and public education jobs.

The growth in jobs was also reflected in the lower number of unemployment insurance claims filed at the end of June – 364,000 claims, a decrease of 51,000 from a week earlier, and the lowest level since March 14, 2020, around the time when Several states implemented their coronavirus lockdowns.

But while the numbers beat expectations, some economists were hesitant to celebrate June’s job numbers altogether, as the latest increase leaves the number of people still in work at or 3 meters above the pre-pandemic peak. Looking for the job below.

$1,500 Bonus for New Employees

Many businesses have begun offering increased wages and hefty signing bonuses to entice new employees to take the job. A Burger King in Pennsylvania offered a $1,500 bonus for new employees on its storefront ad. Some companies have used to teens looking for summer jobs, giving them daily bonuses for presenting up on time.

The debate over whether increased unemployment benefits are encouraging workers to stay home rather than work has intensified over the past few months as businesses report labor shortages. Some states, almost all run by Republican governors, cut access in June to an additional $300 a week the federal government is giving to those unemployed. Other states plan to end the additional benefits in July and August, before the federal government is ready to eliminate the additional benefits on September 6.
