Nissan Will Create 1000 UK Jobs in Battery Investment
1000 UK Jobs | The firm, which already makes Leaf electric cars in Sunderland, may also announce a new electric model.
The government is contributing to the total cost of the project, which is estimated to cost crores.
The area of government participation has not been disclosed.
As a person familiar with the deal said, the government announced a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030, so it was ready to support the transition.
The New Plant will Produce
It is hoped that the new plant will produce the battery in time for 2024 when the level of UK-made components in UK-built cars will begin to increase in line with the terms of the UK trade agreement with the EU – where most of Nissan’s Sunderland-assembled cars are sold.
Industry sources expect the scale and size of the new facility to match a new facility recently announced by Renault in Douai, France – which is a major shareholder in Nissan and a partner in the global manufacturing alliance.

The government is also in talks with Vauxhall to secure the production of electric vehicles at its Ellesmere Port plant. The BBC understands those talks are “proceeding positively” and an announcement is expected in the next few weeks.
Electric Cars
The market for electric cars is growing rapidly (1000 UK Jobs).
But earlier this month, influential green group Transport and Environment (T&E) said the UK risks being left behind in the race to build electric cars.
The Brussels-based campaign group said that as recently as 2018, the UK produced almost half of all-electric cars manufactured in Europe.
But it claimed that the lack of investment by UK manufacturers meant the figure could fall to just 4% by the end of the decade.
T&E also called Nissan’s expansion plans for Sunderland – which will reportedly see the plant with a capacity of 6.5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) – “a small fraction of the 474 GWh of production at 17 sites across Europe for which The money has already been secured”.
